Hi there! My name is Mike, and this blog is the record of my efforts to earn a full time income online, quit my day job, and enjoy the freedom to do what I want when I want. Obviously this is a pretty ambitious goal and it’s going to take a heck of a lot of hard work and discipline to get there.
Being an entrepreneur isn’t as easy as you’d like to believe. If you choose to follow this path you will most definitely be required to work long and hard before you’ll achieve your goals. As Pat Flynn from Smart Passive Income says in each of his podcasts, “It’s all about working hard now so you can sit back and reap the benefits later.”
Remember, this isn’t about winning the lottery or inheriting a fortune from some long-lost relative. This is about ditching the nine to five job and living your life on your own terms.
It’s not about shortcuts, scams, and get rich quick schemes. It’s about enjoying the fruits of your own labor rather than working your hands to the bone so the guy in the corner office can get all the credit.
So What’s the Plan?
By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail. – Benjamin Franklin
Boy, have I learned that lesson the hard way. I spent several years bouncing around from one money-making method to the next. I was always chasing the mythical “secret formula” that would be my key to overnight riches.
It took me years to learn that the only “secret” to success is to provide real value to people.
Sure, you can go and build 100 crappy websites and slap AdSense all over them and you’ll probably make some money doing that. But when Google adjusts their algorithms they’ll all be toast and you’ll have to start all over again (believe me, I speak from experience).
These days I approach things with a more long-term view. Rather than going for a few quick bucks, I’m focusing on building solid, long-term assets that will stand the test of time.
Right now that consists of just two projects…
Wealthy Turtle is my personal finance blog. There my aim is to discuss financial topics in plain English that anyone can understand. Too many people don’t even understand basic financial concepts like the difference between gross income and net income or how compound interest works.
I believe strongly that we should all take responsibility for our finances rather than just shrugging our shoulders in despair, so I hope to do some small good by helping to educate people about their money.
Elude the Cube is all about entrepreneurship, quitting your day job, and making money online. Here is where I’ll share my experiences (both successes and failures) and try to guide people like you towards the life you always wanted.
I still have a few smaller niche sites that I hardly touch. They’re mostly under-developed…I would often start a site on a whim but quickly lose interest as soon as something new caught my eye. I allowed most of those domains to expire, but I still have a few that are potential money-makers if I can find the time to work on them.
I’m not really worried about those tiny sites though. Spreading yourself thin and trying to do too much too soon is a recipe for disaster. You’ll only burn yourself out and when that happens quitting becomes a real temptation. Besides, I’d rather have one or two really great sites that produce steady income than 50 thin sites that don’t produce anything.
Are YOU Ready to Take the Challenge?
I believe very strongly that everyone should be working to build new streams of income if they want to achieve true financial freedom.
Perhaps you’re looking to start your own business because you hate your job and you want to be able to tell your boss where he can shove it. Or maybe you just can’t stand corporate politics and hate having to answer to a boss.
Whatever your reasons, you’ve come to the right place. I hope to build a community of like-minded people who will learn from and support one another in their quest for true financial independence.
Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to start planning your escape from cubicle hell right now. Think about where you want to be in a few years, consider what you need to do to get there, and formulate a plan to achieve your goals.
Don’t be one of those people who sits at their desk all day being miserable and wishing you were somewhere else. There are other options. The only question is are you ready to start taking action?
